I got Sony HDR-CX500v Camcorder from Amazon 4 days back. Last night I tried to use Remote Control/Commander supplied in the box but it didn’t work. I changed the battery but that didn’t work.

I called Amazon customer support and she gave me 3 options-

    1. Return and get refund

    2. Return and get another one

    3. Take 15% discount on whole amount and buy a remote from local store

I am confused what to do. How come new set will have dead RC or does it happen sometime?

For now I have taken 15% discount and ordered for another remote on ebay. Will update once I get the new RC.

But my doubt is in future will there be any issue in camcorder too if the whole unit was bad. As of now camcorder looks good.

The camcorder overall is good and I can’t imagine a better than this at price I got it. But dead remote of a new camcorder stops me rating it 5/5.

Update: I got a new remote last night and it worked perfectly. I am happy now. The camcorder is really amazing and deserves 5 out of 5. Since my remote was not working I had rated this 3/5 otherwise it’s 5/5.

We bought it for the holiday as our old sony miniDV camcorder is too old. It’s very slim, compact; indoor quality is good too. We all like it very much!!!

The price is certainly right. I have owned several AVDHD flash-based HD camcorders – the CX500V has the best low-light performance, reasonable stills, smaller than most and way cheaper. Comparing this to my trusted Panasonic SD1, the CX500V was clearly better in low light, could shoot stills while filming, better macro, wonderful niteshot, and had built in 32Gb with fast USB xfer to a PC. Not usually mentioned, the xfer over the USB is much faster to my PC than transferring video from the SD! which uses removable SD cards. Finally, the steadyshot is the best I have ever seen – wow.

I had issues with the confusing and cramped touch screen nest of menus, and like the Sony touch screen cameras like my TX1, you often have to touch the button several times to register a hit. Way bad – not cool, Sony! Better than the infamous T500 touch screen camera but NO way near as sensitive as an iPhone for example. The fade-in and out was not easy to find – should be a dedicated button. Touching the screen of course jiggles the video – gRRRRR.

So, would I buy this again? Surely, the price is great for what you get. Would I love to change some key issues for me? Yes – see above.

I love this new camcorder. Easy to use and the low light footage is excellent. I film my kids inside more than outside so this was a must. The night vision option is fun and really does work. I like the compact size and the built in HD too. Less moving parts.

I bought this few weeks ago and took it to Lake Tahoe, CA last week, The video and the picture taken were awesome

and very clear even in low light snowing conditions. I have been waiting for this Camera/Camcoder combo that can

take good quality pictures (12MP) as well. The smile detection is pretty cool, my wife loved it bcos she always

complained that I never took such a natural smile of her :-) .

The GPS location feature is a plus and the software that comes with this is pretty cool and fast in transferring

and converting the videos. It worked on Win7 as well even though they didn’t mention it.

The touch screen is nice but have some nail to tap it to be precise. The menu settings structure took a bit

to understand and modify the defaults. I wish the red-eye setting is ON by default, but it forced me to learn

their menu settings and turn it on.

Overall its pretty good buy for those who dont want to carry camera and camcoder separately.
